18 December 2015 Towns and Cities

For too long Antalya – the gateway to the Turkish Riviera – was dismissed as a destination for package tourists. Yet its turquoise coastline, Roman-built harbour and Lycian landscape offer so much more than all-inclusive resorts. Over the past few years, the city has been carving a niche for itself as an outpost where business and diplomacy meet. The G20 met here in November 2015 and the city hosts the Turkish Airlines Open golf tournament; there are several first-class golf courses around Antalya. There’s also talk of a cruise-ship terminal that may turn Antalya into Miami on the Med and plans for a high-speed rail link to Istanbul and Ankara. This city is readying itself to receive the world.
